The Art of Ryan Francis

News of the World

There hasn’t been much for me to talk about these weeks.

For those who haven’t heard before, I finished my comic, Shirley’s Day, and it’s stated to release for print around September 11th (you probably will need a reminder).

But, you can buy a digital version on Etsy to support me! It’s 16 pages of content, which includes some behind the scenes stuff that I felt I couldn’t post online due to the nature of the story I was telling.

In this time, I’m in the process of working on many different things:

Collosal Catch-Up Update

I’ve slipped badly on keeping my website updated and not streaming, but I’ve been tackling important money making things between my dayjob and my freelancing!

Here is what I’ve been doing for the past three weeks!

I’ve recently finished a logo commission for a good friend and co-worker of mine!

5/12/2018 Streaming News

I streamed again today. I got some new progress done, added Leprechaun Squire and did a bit more refining where it needs to be, values could use more work and the texture variety is lacking.
I won’t be stream next week as I’ll be at Anime Central hanging out. I’ll be streaming the week after though.
I thought I would get my comic done by now but other freelance opportunities and my stupid procrastination and perfectionism has put the comic in a perpetual 90% finished state that I can’t push through. I’m realizing this now and I’m gonna just let go, edit my lettering and get to drawing a cover and making my stupid zine already!
The Chalk Cap

Art Stuff at Water Tower Place

I’ve been at the Water Tower Place in Chicago doing live art at The Chalk Cap.

It was a fun time hanging out with people and making some cool custom hats! This idea is pretty cool though, as you can buy a cap with a surface on it where you can draw on it with chalk marker and it can be cleaned off with water!

It was a bit getting used to but it’s good to try out new mediums! I drew names, character requests and whatever else I could think of It was pretty great and I’ll totally show up next time!

C2E2 Love and Sketchbook Talking

I missed an update due to C2E2 being two weekends ago! I had a good time showing off my work and meeting cool artists there!  Most feedback on my comic just asked me to finish Shirley’s Day and print it myself to give away to people to show off, so despite all my doubts strangers like my artwork.

I despite not speaking to enough artists and attending panels, I had a decent time and I’m glad I went. Hopefully, next year I’ll be at Artist Alley.

As for my comic progress, I’ve made little. My computer crash during the stream and I didn’t save my progress, so I lost a good hour of work. Frustrated with faulty tablet drivers, I ended the stream early that night. I can knock out the comic another time.

Some artwork and sketches I haven’t posted yet.

I’d been doing some refinements on Gogh the Goat Wizard and trying to figure out a decent story for him.

One idea I have for a new comic story, is for Cole the Raccoon Merchant to meet up with a party of adventurers to sell his stuff to.

This is the fighter character of the party who is with Gogh the Goat Wizard and Weasel Thief. The most I thought of him is a “generic” super warrior type, like Brock Samson.

He’s inspired by the Guin Saga of books mostly in visuals and is a very minor character. Maybe when I delve more into the story, I could think of a better personality.

I was filling out my Sketchwallet and doodled this jungle cat girl during the train to the convention. I’m feeling the design a bit so I wanted to do some refining.

I did a turnaround sketch for her. I could stand to give less characters bandages though…

I’m currently thinking that Jungle Cat could be a suitable replacement for the big jaguar guy since she looks more interesting as a design.

3-5-2018 Characters

I was having a bit of a hectic week, catching up with important things like renewing my drivers license, fixing my car, and completing a commission that I haven’t made much comic progress. My posting has been more sporadic because I’m trying to figure out how to get the quality of my artwork to better snuff. Daily sketches are fine but not when they never finish and it’s  thing that bothers me often. I’m trying my best to post better work and not just phoning in a sub-par daily sketch that means nothing to me.

This was a commissioned character for a game called Knockout Mice. This is nice and all but I’m not feeling the line art is up to snuff, but I managed to get it done in a timely matter and my client was happy with it.

Acrylic coloring of an Antelope Warrior Character. I kind peg him as a nameless grunt who wars with the Lion Legion.
